natural bug repellant

Have you ever noticed that some people can stand outside at dusk, by a creek, with perfume on and not have a single bug land on them? Well then there is me who goes outside with long sleeves and pants and somehow last night I had a bug bite on my stomach. How could that happened? No idea. It is always so disappointing to me that the perfect times for me to be outside are also the prime times for the bugs to be out there too.

I have raved before about how therapeutic afternoons in the garden can be. I love taking the time to play with cooper, pull some weeds and check on the chickens but often I have to come in early because I can easily count 20 bites on my legs within minutes. Of course Jim has none. This summer I have come across lots of recipes for making your own insect repellant so I thought I would give it a shot. It only takes 2 ingredients and 1 you already have.

To make your own bug repellant you simply combine 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil with 25 drops of lavender oil, geranium oil or lemon eucalyptus oil. All three smell delicious and have been proven deterrents of insects. I tried with lavender oil because it was what I have on hand but most studies show that lemon eucalyptus oil has been rated almost as high as DEET when it comes to mosquitos. I am thinking i'll have to try this one tonight.

  1. Mosquitoes have been everywhere these last couple of days! We're both getting bitten. So boring.

Let's hope this works! I've read about this quite a few times but never really tried. Though I've found a miraculous remedy to ease the scratching! There's a blog post coming up about it! :)
